Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Energy Management

What is Energy Studies?

Energy Studies at Murdoch University is an exciting multi-disciplinary course which provides the broad understanding of sustainable energy supply and use needed to work in today's rapidly changing energy industry. It addresses the social, environmental and economic aspects as well as the scientific and technical aspects. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills to develop and implement new methods of renewable energy production and to improve the efficiency of existing systems and appliances.

What will I learn?

Energy is the basis of our modern industrial society, powering our homes, workplaces, transport and communications systems. However, as concern mounts about limited resources, human induced climate change and air pollution due to the burning of fossil fuels, new sustainable sources of energy are being sought to replace those which we currently use.

The Bachelor of Science (Sustainable Energy Management) is available on the South Street Campus or externally via correspondence or the internet anywhere in Australia or the world. It consists of core units in Energy Studies and electives which can be selected from any other program in the University, giving you the flexibility to design your own degree.

Required Units - you are required to take units in the core areas of Energy Studies: University Foundation Unit, General Physics, Applied Mathematics, Introduction to Chemistry, Introduction to Energy Studies, Energy in Society, Energy Management, Greenhouse Science and Policy, Energy Systems, Energy Policy and Energy Economics. (See Degree)

Electives - you can combine your Energy Studies major with units, minors or majors in another discipline, allowing you to tailor your degree to suit your interests and further increase your job prospects. Popular combinations with Energy Studies include: Environmental Science, Physics and Nanotechnology, Chemistry, Sustainable Development, Economics, Computer Science, Business Information Systems, Law, Management, Marketing, Accounting and Renewable Energy Engineering. (See Double Majors)

Bachelor of Engineering - Renewable Energy

If you would like to focus more on the engineering aspects of renewable energy systems you should consider the Bachelor of Engineering degree (BE) in Renewable Energy Engineering offered at Murdoch University. If you are interested in both degrees, it will be possible to do a double degree in Energy Studies and Renewable Energy Engineering (approximately 5 years).

What jobs can I get?

The energy industry, especially renewable energy and energy management, are rapidly growing areas of employment in Australia and overseas. Graduates of Energy Studies can expect to pursue careers in power utilities, renewable energy manufacturing and installation companies, international aid organizations, Government departments, energy efficiency and environmental consultancies, university and private industry research organisations and in energy companies. (See Careers)

Some of the areas of employment include renewable energy system design and planning, policy analysis, energy economics, energy management and energy efficiency consulting, greenhouse gas accounting and reduction, assessing the social and environmental impact of energy systems and renewable energy research and development.

The Murdoch University Bachelor of Science (Sustainable Energy Management) will enable you to be part of the solution.
