Energy Studies Honours Program

The Energy Studies Honours program is an optional fourth year of undergraduate study in which students with a high level of achievement in Part II studies may undertake advanced studies and gain experience in modern research methods. An appropriate background would consist of the Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Energy Management or a pass degree in any related subject that included the 11 point Minor in Energy Studies, or equivalent.

The objectives of the Honours year are to:

  • provide opportunities for advanced studies in energy related areas;
  • introduce research methods in Energy Studies;
  • give students research experience that will assist them in determining whether they are suited for postgraduate studies;
  • permit students to undertake advanced energy-based interdisciplinary studies or research; and
  • study and research one or more aspects of Energy Studies in considerable depth.

It is intended that students completing the Honours year will have developed the ability and confidence to work independently, by drawing on their background of advanced studies and their experience with research methods and the scientific literature.

The most significant component of the assessment is the research project, which will be theoretical, laboratory or industry based. Assessment of this is normally based on a written dissertation. Choice of a research project should be made in consultation with the relevant Energy Studies staff member. A list of research projects is available from this website or the Energy Studies Program Chair. The research project has a value of 16 points and requires approval by the School Deans in consultation with appropriate academic staff. Contact the Program Chair for more details.

Students interested in enrolling Honours are advised to contact the Program Chair before submitting an application to discuss supervision of their potential research project.

The remaining 8 points may be chosen from appropriate units at the 400 level or higher or at part II level in consultation with the Energy Studies Program Chair and with the approval of the Honours Subcommittee. Highly recommended are the following units:

PEC670 Energy Efficient Building Design
PEC587 Renewable energy and Sustainable Development
PEC611 Life Cycle Analysis and Greenhouse Accounting

Students taking the Honours year should enrol in PEC4099 Honours thesis in Sustainable Energy Management - 16 points (full-time) or 8 points (part-time) in each of two years.

Internet access is required for students studying externally; exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
