Welcome to Energy Studies at Murdoch

Murdoch University offers programs of study in Energy Studies, Nanoscience and Physics and in at the Bachelor, Postgraduate Diploma and Masters levels. We also provide research opportunities leading to Honours, Masters and PhD degrees.

Energy Studies Program

Programme ChairEnergy Studies is an exciting new field of science concerned with new approaches to energy conversion, energy management and energy policy. All the following programs in Energy Studies are available internally or externally and can easily be combined with studies in related fields such as physics, chemistry and mineral science. In particular, the Energy Studies major with a minor in Physics is a highly recommended option.

A Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Energy Management has been available as a three-year degree from 2002 as a BSc in Energy studies and the degree was renamed for 2007. Options are offered to allow students to supplement their studies with a minor or double major from another Murdoch university program of study.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Energy Studies is designed for graduates in any discipline who wish to acquire knowledge and skills in energy studies in one year of full-time study or part time over two or three years. The Diploma is offered on a fee paying basis only.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Energy and the Environment is intended to provide postgraduate training for Australian and international professionals working, or wishing to work, in the field of environmental management of the energy industry. It also can be completed in one year of full-time study or part time over two or three years. The Diploma is offered on a fee paying basis only.

The Master of Science (Renewable Energy) is now a one-year program of study. To be eligible for the program you must first complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Energy Studies or the Postgraduate Diploma in Energy and the Environment or have completed the Bachelor of Applied Science (Energy Studies) (no longer offered). Applicants with an appropriate fourth year tertiary qualification in Energy Studies may be admitted directly into the Masters with the Program Chair's approval.

All of the energy studies units may be studied externally in an online format and a demonstration version of the unit websites is available.

Energy Studies Research

All the staff in Energy Studies are active in research. We have well-equipped laboratories and there is strong technical support. Our general fields of major research activity include:

  • Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conversion
  • Structure and Properties of Amorphous Materials
  • Remote area power supplies
  • Solar powered medical facilities

Postgraduate training is an important aspect of research and we can offer research projects leading to MPhil or PhD degrees in these areas.
