Since graduating I have held two engineering positions. Originally I was employed as a Systems Engineer by Automated Control Systems and currently I am employed as a Graduate Electrical Engineer by Hatch Associates. Hatch is a worldwide engineering consultancy to the Mining, Metallurgy and Transportation industries. As a graduate my responsibilities include assisting in the design, maintenance and ongoing operation of new and established mining and industrial installations. When graduating from Murdoch University I found the task of getting a job quite easy, as the ICE course although new, is starting to become well known and respected throughout organizations in Western Australia. Also as the Instrumentation and Control profession is a niche not yet met within industry, it meant that I had several positions to choose from when seeking a job. The experience at Murdoch University over the last four years has been most rewarding. Returning to full time study after such a long time provided many challenges that were overcome with the help and guidance of experienced staff sincerely dedicated to assisting students to achieve their personal goals. The course design not only dealt with aspects of software engineering but also incorporated subjects that were related to business activities; Economics, Accounting and Organisational Behaviour to name a few. This made the course a well tailored framework to provide a good grounding for students entering the workforce as Engineers. In my final year I had the opportunity to enter an Internship program, one of the first group to partake in this initiative. This provided valuable workplace experience for students who took part as well as forging closer ties between industries and Murdoch. This benefits Murdoch in tailoring and fine tuning their degree courses to meet the ever changing needs of industry. Alita Shryock Instrumentation and Control graduate
During my time at Murdoch I was always able to approach my lectures and ask for help. They would always be able to make time for you since they are teaching a smaller group of students. I was always able to log onto a computer or use the labs and I rarely had to wait for textbooks from the library. Rockingham is a small campus that ensures that students receive all the support they need and are not lost in the crowd. As part of my course I was given the opportunity to complete an Engineering Internship, which enabled me to work in Industry for 6 months while gaining credit points for my degree. My Internship with Woodside gave me a chance to apply what I had learnt in my course and gain some valuable hands on experience as well as develop industry contacts. I am now working at Woodside as a Graduate Engineer and will be a part of the large team of people looking after the Instrumentation and Control Systems on Woodside's various Oil and Gas facilities off the North West Shelf. |
